Zones of Regulation
The “Zones of Regulation” is an evidence based framework for teaching students strategies for emotional and sensory self -management. Rooted in cognitive behavioural therapy, a zones approach uses four colours to help students identify how they’re feeling in the moment given their emotions and level of alertness. Students are taught how to notice their body signals to identify behavioural triggers, read social context and consider how their behaviour impacts those around them. Students, over time, learn and improve emotional control, self- regulation self-awareness and problem-solving abilities. At McKay school a number of classrooms actively use this framework to help students better reflect on their emotions and feelings.
