Taking Action to Support Literacy Growth at McKay

This Fall, we did school-wide assessments of literacy skills. Classroom teachers and resource teachers met individually with every student to assess their decoding skills (how they are reading the words of text) and their comprehension skills (how they are understanding what they are reading).

As we could see that many of our students would benefit from focused instruction, support, and practice with different components of decoding skills, we took action in the following ways:

- Organized professional development opportunities with our district literacy consultants.

- Re-organized our resource teacher support schedules to include more targeted intervention groupings to boost specific literacy skills.

- Created a Literacy Committee to lead our work this year around the question: "How can we can support all of our students in improving their literacy skills- especially those that need it the most?"

- We committed the majority of our current Learning Resources budget towards materials and books that would support teachers with their literacy instruction.
